When: This Saturday (1st March), 6 p.m.
How much to bring: Enough for yourself (For those who haven't paid $15 by this Friday, please bring an extra $15, thank you!)

The booking for Fish and Co hasn't been confirmed yet, but Jon said that they can help us reserve if we call back that afternoon by 3p.m. We can most definitely do that, so yay :D Anyway no worries, because Sharon and I will be there early, yay for us! Ahaha.

2. It is suggested that you use a normal scientific calculator
rather than the graphing calculator. Candidates who wish to use the
graphing calculator are required to reset their graphing calculator
memory, and show the Invigilator the “MEM CLEARED” screen before

3. Writing paper and Generic Mark Scheme for Skill D are provided
during the examination. The generic mark scheme can also be found in
the Skill D lecture notes.

does anyone have any suggestions for cip outing? i think there's onli a few of u out there who really need Cip , so i m not sure how many would actually turn out for this activity if i were to organised it...

Anyway, do provide me with some suggestions on the type of activites that u all wan (go old folks home, children home, or maybe changi prison???) and give me a date that is feasible for u all to go. erhhhh.... maybe we can go WEST coast park and pick up the rubbish there as CIP. Then it will become some kinda class outing cum cip (WEST COAST, not east coast. im the boss here).

Was quite fun ahaha!

Okay, so the turnout for dinner sucked. When the 6N juniors were waiting for us the class bench, only Sharon, Li Hui and I were there. Quite sad eh. But we had a nice chat with the junior girls and we think they're quite nice! Ehehe. :D

And during campfire well I'm really really glad that people DID turn up after all, and it made me feel a whole lot better. When I was staring down from the second level of the hall at the start of the concert, realising that maybe, just maybe, less than 5 people would turn up, I felt like crying. (yeah yeah I know, so stupid right.) Cos I felt like a horrible, horrible welfare rep who can't live up to expectations and stuff. I mean, if I'm given a job to do I should do it well right? If not I'd rather not do it. BUT ANYWAY, I'm really happy to say a lot of you turned up and well just for that, I SHALL FORGIVE THOSE WHO DIDN'T GO. Ehehe okay whatever, I'm starting to talk rubbish.

We are going to join our juniors tomorrow for campfire! Aye it feels weird to have juniors cos actually I still feel like one ehehe. I'm so childish. :D yay!

Anyway, for those who haven't picked their mortal, please approach me to do so. Or I will approach you. So it won't make a difference. Haha! People who haven't picked their mortals include Mao Yang and Kok Wei and others?? Please be nice to our juniors and write at least a few letters to them, don't dao completely. I'M BEGGING YOU AHAHA how pathetic can I get.

Oh yes, and tomorrow do we wanna have dinner before campfire? well, i've been searching for the past two days, and i kinda chose this chalet
nsrcc chalet. i think most of you all have heard of it b4.

A good example of precise economic analysis

Hi 07S6E,

I was going through the case studies of the econs promos and having to mark the usual "GP-ish" and imprecise answers, especially with regards to the last 2 questions, I thought it would be good to show you a model of good economic analysis.

If you click on the above title link, you will see how Gary Becker, a Nobel winner in economics, explain the problem with traffic congestion in a very analytical way and how a proper tax system should be implemented.

The objective for you is not to memorize what he is saying but to internalize for yourself what a good economic answer should be.

For those more interested students, here are some questions that has answers appearing in this particular blog entry.

1) How do economists measure the external cost of traffic congestion? (Hint: look at the 4th paragraph)

2) How did Becker follow my prescribed algorithm to explain the externality? (Hint: 5th paragraph last few sentences as well as the 6th paragraph.) See, I taught you that method for a clear reason! =)

3) How did Becker explain why tax rates need to be different? (7th paragraph. Notice how precisely he explains it without any vague "GP-ish" terms. This is something that I hope to see appearing in your econ answers)

4) How did Becker evaluate the various policies different countries use?

Hope all of you will learn the value of going beyond your notes and read more of such good examples of economic analysis in your J2 years.

HI PEOPLE. Jiayou for promos alright! It's only one day away T_T but freedom is 5 days away only too! :) You guys are such muggers, I'm sure there's no problem :D

I HAD A WEIRD DREAM LAST NIGHT. I dreamt I missed GP and econs exam. And I woke up panicking and I immediately checked the date and time. Haha! And somehow I also dreamt that our class was in a weird war (think unreal tournament) in this school compound. We were all clutching rifles =x And someone got shot by a sniper. And we (the girls) wanted to take cover but joshua and chunmeng went "Just dao la" and the guys started spreading white pieces of paper on the ground and sitting on it to play cards. LOL. Oh, and gek theng came up to me and said something like "Let's go ask Mr Chan this physics question later k"

Conclusions:
1. I'm studying too much.
2. We shouldn't play Unreal Tournament (Binbin you can add this into your PW haha!)
3. Gek is a mugger haha!

just as i wallow in self-pity at what a distasteful day i have had, i realise i'm in the company of many others. almost everyone i know have been having an awful time as well. i barely saw any genuine smiles today, like those that show true happiness. somehow, everything just goes awry and you feel your life is in a TOTAL mess. as i struggle to hold back my tears, i really wish i could just wipe out my fears. perhaps in any situation that we are facing, we should just take a step back and do some deep pondering. it isn't about mulling over your plight; it's about coming to terms with it. we have to learn to deal with such unpleasant issues and isn't that what growing up is all about? be it academic matters, cca and personal commitment, family issues or relationships with your friends that's hogging your mind right now, we simply have to deal with it and not leave it dangling. all it takes is for YOU to take on a positive approach. maybe all you need is simply a break that could keep you going. keep your cool and chill out yeah. this period may be a trying one for most of us so we've really gotta stay strong and fight on. When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on. take care my dear friends (:

Hope all of you are getting a good balance of work and leisure during this June break.

I have probably mention this in class before but here is one recent story that you will be able to apply the elasticity concepts that you have learnt. You may have heard of how NETS is going to increase the cost to retail firms that installed facilities allowing customers to pay using their local bank ATM cards.

Here is a quote from the above article

Although existing regulations do not allow this, Mr Yeo said retailers could still tweak product prices if they want to.

Now, I hope all of you remember the fundamental lesson in tax incidence. It really does not matter which party, by law, is responsible to pay the Net surcharge. By law, NETS is levying this extra charge to the firms. Can you apply your elasticity concepts and state which industries might see the firms passing the burden to the consumers and which industries may see firms absorbing the surcharge?

Finally, a related topic, if your parents urge you to quickly make big purchases before July 1st because after that, you will have to pay more due to the GST increase, again, how would you answer them using your knowledge of elasticity?

heres a little story for u
I took this story from some website :)

A little boy is on the beach. He is painstakingly building a sandcastle. All afternoon he will work. Spooning out the moat. Packing the walls. Bottle tops will be sentries. Popsicle sticks will be bridges.
A man is in his office. At his desk he shuffles papers into stacks and delegates assignments. He cradles the phone on his shoulder and punches the keyboard with his fingers. Numbers are juggled and contracts are signed and much to the delight of the man, a profit is made.

He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table. When I was mentioning in the economics lesson on Friday about the difference between the GP perspective and the Economic perspective towards the use of beautiful people in advertising, I had the above article in mind.

You can read it to gain a deeper level of understanding on how economists approach issues, especially on how economists generally distrust government intervention.

Your markers would want to see the same sharp perspective in your economic essays!

oh dear dear. our blog has been inactive for such a long time! sighh please blog up people or this class blog will become my personal blog. i can crap a lot you know HAHAHA.

anyway just wanna say a very big THANKYOU to my dear 6e friends for those who have been supporting and encouraging me especially the four of YOU! the times of laughing, bitching, chatting, mugging, slacking and not to forget teasing (hmm it better stop huhh) are really fun hahah. though its quite sad that there are only five of us, on a positive note, we are really close! if there were more girls, we'll just end up in cliques (like the other gender) so aint it better this way! BUT though our class is quite cliquey, i think we still rock on the whole and im really glad to be here with all of you (: i mean if you ask ard, other classes may not have such nice ppl like us and ahem the one typing here of course hahaha. so YAYY (:

A big sorry to the seniors for postponing JTS for so long. JTS is now more or less fixed on 14th April, tentatively at Vivo. There's a lot of nice restaurants there at vivo and we can check them out.

The reason why it isn't on 7th April is because there is council camp for the new councilors as well as 小黄城 for Chinese Society people. There's H1 chinese test on 14th April but it should be okay since JTS is in the evening.

If all's good, JTS details should be as follow:
Location: Vivocity
Meeting Time: 6.30PM, 14th April
Meeting Place: HarbourFront MRT Station, outside the control room or around that area.

Please note that we will be paying for the whole meal. The seniors do not have to top up the rest.

Maybe we shouldn't go home after the JTS. We can stay behind and get to know people from each other classes better. We may be able to recognize each other in school but we don't really know each other well. It will be good if we can take the time for some interaction between us and the senior class.

our seniors are really really pissed at us for postponing JTS again. And the council nominees are being blamed, wth.

Yesterday when I asked who was going for JTS, only 2 people gave me a definite 'YES'. Okay I'm not very happy about that. I myself am sorry for being unable to go, because it's my cousin's 21st birthday tmr. But believe me, if I could go, I would. And I hope that all of you think the same way.

Please go for JTS next Saturday unless you have something important on. By 'important' I don't mean "Oh I have to take care of my pet dog on Saturdays". -__- And please don't give excuses like "I want to save money so I shan't go". Did you hear the seniors giving such excuses for STJ? NO. So let's please be nice to them alright?

ok.i know this is abit belated but better late than never right.

i just saw my posting results, i got posted to 7C, so i probably will see you guys during math lecture?SO please don't kill me for leaving... BIN i not ready to die yet.haha.

these two and a half months in 6e was really pretty nice, although it was a shock at first about the pathetic girl to boy ratio, but i think it got better towards the end. (:

we sure had our fun times together, the class bbq, stj and bitching about hc in general.

to the girls:
MY LOVELY SHARON- from sec one we have been in the same class, best of friends somemore, although it was like AIYA see your face again in jc (: but what i didn't tell you was i was happy to see your face again. Thanks for sticking with me through thick and thin since sec 1, and although we are not in the same class anymore *surprise surprise* i hope we will never never ever lost contact ok(: love you loads.

Lihui- my fellow huang cheng and nanyanger, although i didn't know you from before i really enjoyed these three months with you. (: you're damn dedicated and i applaud you for that. huang cheng's over now so GET SOME SLEEP!

Henghui- my fellow nanyanger too, jiayou for council! it was fun being in the same class as you.

BINN2- my og mate, huang chenger, classmate, and charmaine friend. from the start of hc life nearly everything we did was together right! it was fun listening to jokes during og outings, sewing and watching hanakimi together during huang cheng and copying gekky's math tutorials during class haha. and the sunflower haha! i am sure we will still see alot of each other, considering how fate like to put us together haha.

Now that the presentation of ILP has been completed, I can let you view this very useful study done by Alan Kreuger of Princeton University on the "Economics of Rock concerts". This will of course be most useful to Sharon and the other girls who did this topic for their ILP.

You can see both the written report in pdf format as well as powerpoint slides used. The analysis uses more than just the usual demand and supply framework so don't worry too much if you do not understand parts of it, especially in the written report. Feel free to ask any questions you may have either in the comments here or personally after lessons, or even during lessons.
